Pre-painted galvanized steel is a coil coated product: the paint is applied to the strip on a continuous line before the steel is formed into anything. That sequence is what makes the coating even, repeatable and free of the runs and edge build-up that spray painting a finished part produces.

The buyer is specifying two products at once

A pre-painted coil is a paint system sitting on a galvanized substrate, and both halves carry a specification.

The paint decides appearance, colour retention and how the surface survives forming. The zinc underneath decides corrosion life, and it keeps doing that job at cut edges and scratches where the paint no longer protects anything. A heavy paint system over a light zinc coating looks correct on delivery and fails early in an exposed application.

Buyers who specify only the colour end up with material that is technically as ordered and wrong for the building it goes on.

Colour, gloss and what “the same” means

Colour is stated as a reference against a recognised system, not as a name. Gloss is a measured range, which is why matt, low gloss and semi-gloss are quoted as bands rather than adjectives.

Both need a tolerance attached when the order is part of a series. Panel producers supplying one project over several months are judged on whether delivery three matches delivery one, and that is a contractual question settled at enquiry stage.

Forming is part of the specification

Paint has to survive being bent. A coating that performs in service but cracks at a tight radius is unusable for a roll former producing corrugated profiles or panel edges.

Where the buyer’s forming is tight, the paint system and top coat thickness are qualified against that radius rather than against a general durability class.

What ROXAY qualifies before quoting

Paint system and top coat thickness, colour reference and gloss band with tolerance, substrate coating weight, steel thickness and width with tolerance, applicable standard, forming requirement, coil inner diameter and slit width where relevant.

Mills, origin countries, suppliers and routes are not published.

Questions buyers ask

What has to be specified on a pre-painted steel order beyond colour?

Paint system and top coat thickness, colour reference against a recognised system, gloss range, the zinc coating weight of the substrate, steel thickness and width with tolerance, and the applicable standard. Colour alone does not describe a coil — two coils in the same shade can behave completely differently in forming and in service.

How does the paint system change what the material is suitable for?

Polyester is the general purpose system and suits most interior and moderately exposed applications. PVDF holds colour and gloss far longer under strong sunlight, which is why it is specified for architectural facades and for hot, high UV markets. The premium is bought for colour retention, not for the initial appearance.

Can a repeat order be matched to a previous colour?

Colour continuity across batches has to be agreed in advance, with a reference sample and an accepted tolerance written into the contract. It matters most where a buyer supplies panels for a single building in stages — a visible shade difference between deliveries is a rejection even when both are inside the nominal colour.
